Wolf Children was a film that greatly catches my attention simply thanks to the message that it tells us, the importance of what a family bond means. When the father or mother figure is missing, the other person in charge has to take care of both roles to raise the kids properly. The film had much criticism due to the “presumed zoophilia message”.But in my point of view of someone who enjoys all kinds of content, I think of the Wolf Children as a mere film that wants to give importance to the fact that a mother (by mother also meaning father and both) is something key for a kid’s education. It shows how true love and dedication helps in the kid’s emotional growth (at least when I watched this film for the first time). If you ask me, I do not see any message about “zoophilia” in this film (supposing that these people now love and recommend Beastars). It’s simply a fictional film. I say it like this because of Doomentio’s video. "Comentario perezoso #1-7" (YouTube) , where he talks about the symbolism and the “true message” of acceptance. The presumed normalization of zoophilia and the main character, who makes many mistakes. And you know what? He is right.Well, in some parts I can agree with him. The presumed message of acceptance the film wants to tell can be bad and even dangerous if you analyze it properly. Many “modern reviewers” link the content of “self-acceptance and acceptance” as if they know that not all the content that it tells this “self-acceptance and acceptance” is good. I saw the film as something different, I saw that the work of being a parent is very difficult but necessary for the young people’s education who will soon become adults. I don’t see Wolf Children as a realistic film, but as a film that tells in a fictional what being a mother implies (removing the “acceptance” message). So in this post, I will give my opinion of how I saw the film the first time I watched it…

# About this movie

Wolf Children was created and produced by Mamoru Hosoda. He also is the director of “The girl who leaped through time.”. (I will soon make a post talking about this film.). It was produced by the company MadHouse and Studio Chizu, among others. It was released in July of 2012 in Japan, and at the end of 2013 in South America. It got a Spanish (Spain) dub and another Spanish (South America) produced in Mexico. This happened the same way a manga got dubbed to Spanish thanks to the distributor Panini, sold in the South American market.

# The story, Climax, and Characters

This story begins with Hanna, a college girl who studies at a Tokyo university. She lives peacefully, working at night time, and with a student scholarship. Hanna is characterized as a very kind, happy, hyperactive, and positive girl. This is shown minutes after the film starts, something that we appreciate looking at her lifestyle in a small department. She has a simple routine of studying, working, buying, eating, and reading, something we all do every day.

Hanna’s life was good, a normal girl whose days went on studying and working. But one day, she met someone who she had never seen. Hanna’s curiosity and eagerness to help led to meeting Ookami, our second character. Ookami is a calm person who doesn’t speak much, but he got on well with Hanna. They quickly became best friends and they helped each other with their college schooling. The film’s synopsis tells us that Hanna and Ookami met and had 2 kids some years after that. However, the film shows that in fact, it didn't take long for Hanna and Ookami to know each other. This is a small complaint that some spectators had. For some reason, the film can be fairly enjoyable but at the beginning, you feel that the story goes quickly, even it isn’t true.

Ookami y Hanna

In many conversations and discussions, we can learn from Hanna, who is a cheerful person, that we have to act strongly against problems and hard moments in our life. She has a pretty positive character and she shows her feelings. Ookami, being a calm and quiet person, trusts Hanna and he shows her the true feelings he has, like two people who can get on well and love each other. The film goes on and Ookami has to tell a secret to Hanna. They decide to talk about it somewhere on a cold night in Japan. Ookami reveals his secret, showing that he is a werewolf. He tells the story of his childhood, which was hard because he couldn’t show his true identity. By the way, the person who narrates the events in the film is their daughter (and older sister), and yes… the scene where the polemic about the zoophile started was unnecessary. This moment wouldn’t have accepted the film if it hadn’t existed. It would have been better if it was on her human form, but for some reason, they decided to add this filler, unnecessary scene…
After this happening, Hanna and Ookami started having a relationship in which they started knowing better each other, living together , and having more moments alone. But suddenly, they found out that Hanna was pregnant. From now on, the climax of the film starts, and the messages I saw on the film appear. Throughout the pregnancy, we can see the complications and the effects on the emotional and health side of the mother. This is shown in the tiredness, vomits, queasiness, and much more appetite, among many others. But in the end, the kid, the person you “created” is born, and a new phase of life starts, family.

Hanna had her first daughter and called her Yuki. Both Hanna and Ookami saw the family phase as something beautiful, they showed much satisfaction now that they were attached as a bond. They had difficulties but happiness overwhelmed them.

Hanna, Ookami y su hija

Everything was perfect until a tragedy presented itself, Ookami’s death. Yuki, who is the narrator of the film, explains that possibly his saved side and his instinct controlled him looking for food for his newborn, it was something that hurt a lot Hanna, losing not only her husband but an essential part of the family and her kids’ breeding. However, Hanna didn’t get carried away by sadness and she decided to take both roles and raise her kids.

Hanna triste

The loss of a familiar, especially in the firsts phases when the family is starting to take form, is really hard. It’s a moment where the course changes and there’s nothing we can do about it. Hanna decides to take the path alone and start a new and complicated life, forcing her to leave the university and work, living with the money she had saved. At this point, the film shows the hard work of being a mother and what represents taking care of a kid in their first years, and how Hanna keeps fighting no matter what. But things get messy because she has to manage with her two kids, halfwolf, and half-humans. This is the reason why she decides to start a new life somewhere else, life in the countryside is difficult, yet Hanna decides to take it to help the growth of her kids. Throughout its early days in the countryside, she decides to meet people who gain trust with. Ame and Yuki grow, and while Yuki decides to continue and start her school life, Ame decides to join his mother more often to work and discover who he truly is. From this moment the personality of both is shown, and while Yuki decides to be a nice and charismatic person who lives among humans, Ame is someone quiet who doesn’t speak much, like his father, and studies everything around him and what he is. Hanna is surprised that the almost 12 years she spent educating her kids happened quite fast. Yuki decides to go and study in a high school, and when everything finishes, it means that the work as a mother has been done.

# Conclusion

Despite the controversy and the quarrel about what the “true message” is, Wolf Children, at least in my point of view, is a film where we learn about the work of a parent is difficult, especially when there’s one missing. Hanna took her time to help her kids, educate them, and make them know about their capacity to be a werewolf and not scare anyone. Hanna made many mistakes but in the end, the message is that a mother who loves her son will do anything so her kid can keep forward, even sacrificing her own life in the process. Well… this was the way I saw the film, I also have a strong desire to raise a family, have kids. When you are done as a parent, you know that you have educated and prepared your kids for the future, where they can finally have a peaceful rest. Do I recommend this film? That would be your point of view, a judgment made with this opinion or other reviews that can be found on the Internet. Not taking into count the polemic that took place in the social media and the presumed “self-acceptance”, I can recommend you this film as a good way to understand that being a parent is difficult, but at the same time, it’s an adventure many people is willing to accept.
